February 25, 2022 | Circular No. 11404

Dear Member,

The Shipping Federation recently signed the Gulf of Guinea Declaration on Suppression of Piracy, which is designed to raise awareness about the ongoing piracy issue in the Gulf of Guinea and the maritime industry’s call for collective action to address this significant threat to seafarers. A key objective of the declaration, which now has over 500 signatories, is to encourage the implementation of concrete anti-piracy measures by coastal states and other stakeholders, with a view to reducing the number of piracy attacks by at least 80 percent by the end of 2023.  Members who are interested in learning more about this declaration, including how to become a signatory, can do so via this LINK.

Members may also be interested in this new short FILM launched by BIMCO about the life of seafarers and the various challenges they face (including piracy). In addition to raising awareness about the invaluable role of seafarers in moving the world’s trade, the film also marks the start of a campaign calling on governments to undertake concerted action to ensure the safety and wellbeing of seafarers, including through efforts to address the piracy situation in the Gulf of Guinea.

Sincerely,

Chris Hall
President
