May 27, 2024 | Circular No. 10670

Dear Member,

Vessels destined for the Port of Vancouver and transiting from the Brotchie pilot station to an anchorage in the Southern Gulf Islands, Vancouver, English Bay, Nanaimo, or the Fraser River have the opportunity to take part in a trial ‘tidal lift’ program through the end of 2024. The goal of this program is to allow vessels to take advantage of favorable tidal currents, which will reduce transit time in Boundary Pass and Haro Strait, and thereby also reduce:

  • Underwater noise received by sensitive marine species (including endangered Southern Resident killer whales),
  • Pilotage costs, and
  • Fuel consumption while in piloted waters.

Please see this Notice to Industry from the PPA for more information. Pilot dispatchers will communicate with eligible vessels about participating in this program.

Best regards,

Miako Ushio
