April 19, 2023 | Circular No. 11517

Dear Member,

As members are probably aware, over 155,000 federal workers represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) initiated strike action at 12:01 this morning.  Of the above-noted workers, 34,000 are deemed essential and will continue working in some capacity. Consequently, the strike is expected to primarily affect administrative staff spread across multiple departments.

Although it is dificult to predict the concrete impacts the strike may have on member operations and services to ships, the government has developed a a webpage (searchable by department/agency) that provides updated information on essential services that will continue to be delivered during the work stoppage, as well as those that may be disrupted.

The following links may be of particular interest to members, as they provide information on the status of services in departments / agencies that interact most extensively with the marine mode:

Information about affected services in other departments / agencies can be found by consulting the above-noted webpage, although it should be noted that some agencies, such as CBSA, have not yet provided any updated information.

We will continue to monitor this situation and maintain contact with relevant departments and agencies, with a view to keeping members informed of relevant developments as warranted.

Sincerely,

Karen Kancens
Vice President
