May 5, 2023 | Circular No. 11520

Dear Member,

We have been advised of the following Notices to Shipping from the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation:

  1. Niagara Region / Welland Canal: Notice to Shipping No. 6-2023
    Vessel Self-Spotting (VSS) System Reminder
This notice reminds mariners of the VSS displays to a qualified ship its “distance to go” before reaching the vessel’s designated final mooring position (FMP). Therefore, the VSS will display “0” when the bow of the vessel is at its designated FMP, regardless of where that is in the lock.  The notice provides examples with ship’s length and the FMP mark.
  2. Niagara Region / Welland Canal: Notice to Shipping No. 7-2023
Personnel Interfaces with Ships at the Locks in the Welland Canal Revised
This Notice brings to your attention that ship interfaces with ship chandlers for stores or supplies will not be accepted at any lock in the Welland Canal. Stores and supplies can only be taken at Wharves 2, 12 South and 16. The Notice provides details of personnel interface procedures and accessing the locks.
For Ocean Carriers: Designated R1 personnel can embark/disembark ships at Locks 1, 2, 5 & 7.  Emergency situations will be considered.  Pilot exchanges are permitted at Lock 7 as necessary.
  3. Maisonneuve Region / MOL Section: Notice to Shipping No. 7-2023
Interfaces with Ships at Canadian Locks Under MARSEC-1 Revised
This Notice gives details of allowable interfaces, interface procedures, vehicle screenings and gives warning about unattended packages at the locks. Also, no parking is permitted on the locks except in rare cases.

Sincerely,
