July 7, 2024 | Circular No. 11684

Dear Member,

Further our CL sent out earlier today, the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has determined that ILWU Local 514’s declaration of strike action against DP World is in contravention of the Canada Labour Board, and has directed the union to withdraw the 72-hour strike notice issued yesterday.  The full text of the CIRB’s decision and supporting rationale can be found HERE.

As a result of the CIRB decision, the BCMEA has rescinded the industry-wide lockout notice that it issued earlier today in response to the ILWU’s action.  The BCMEA’s most recent notice on this matter can be found HERE.

Additional CIRB hearings on outstanding issues between the BCMEA and the ILWU (which began last week) are scheduled for August 6, 7, 8 and 9.

We will continue to monitor this situation with a view to providing additional information as available.

Sincerely,

Karen Kancens
Vice President
