Dear Member,
As detailed in previous communication, several voluntary and mandatory measures to protect southern resident killer whales (SRKW) on the West Coast came into effect on June 1 as scheduled. These include the ECHO voluntry slowdown at Swiftsure Bank, as well as mandatory Seasonal Slowdown Areas and Interim Sanctuary Zones (see map below).
In addition, the voluntary slowdown at Haro Strait and Boundary Pass, which is triggerered only once whales have been observed in the areas, also came into effect on June 1. This slowdown was triggered because southern resident killer whales, including a new female calf, have consistently been sighted in this area over the past week.
We thank members for their continuing commitment to the protection and recovery of these whales.
Please contact the undersigned with any questions.
Sincerely,
Miako Ushio
