Dear Members,

After consultation with the Canadian Coast Guard, Pilots and other stakeholders and taking into consideration factors such as condition of AtoNs and weather, the Laurentian Pilotage Authority (LPA) has issued the following notices declaring the beginning of winter navigation and departure restrictions from Montreal for long and wide beam vessels effective 5 January 2024 at 00h01.

Please note that the following Notices also include restrictions applicable to other times and regions of the St. Lawrence River as well as rules applicable to safety requirements during the winter period.

Beginning of Departure Restriction from Montreal for Long and Wide Beam Vessels

Beginning of winter navigation between Quebec and Montreal.

Please also note that a Speed Reduction from Montreal to Trois-Rivieres (vicinity Lac Saint-Pierre) is in effect from 05 January in order to maintain the fast ice cover in place between Pointe des Ormes and Ile des Barques.  Mariners are requested to reduce their ground speed to 9 knots for upbound vessels, and to 11 knots for downbound vessels.  Please click here for Navwarn NW-C-0038-24.
