New Study Quantifies Role of International Shipping in Carrying Canada’s Trade

The Shipping Federation of Canada is pleased to announce the release of a groundbreaking new study examining the vital role of international shipping in moving Canada’s trade.

Commissioned by the Federation and conducted by CPCS, the study fills a longstanding data gap in Canada’s trade and transportation landscape by providing an unprecedented view of the tonnage and value of goods moved through Canadian ports and waterways from an international shipping perspective.

This data has traditionally existed only in fragmented form across multiple trade and transportation sources, each employing different collection methodologies, metrics and assumptions. To overcome these challenges, CPCS developed a customized dataset by triangulating information from a broad range of authoritative sources, including the U.N, Statistics Canada, the U.S. Census Bureau, Canadian port authorities and other key data providers.

As illustrated by the study highlights below, the end result is the most comprehensive assessment to date of the role that international ships play in supporting the needs not only of Canada’s exporters and importers, but of the economy as a whole.
