Dear Members,
The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has advised that as of April 9, 2026, short-term demand for anchorages at the Port of Vancouver and across the Southern Gulf Islands is expected to approach capacity. Members are therefore advised to plan for limited anchorage availability and to consider alternative anchorage options in Southern B.C. waters where possible.
In order to support safe and efficient operations during this period of peak demand, the VFPA has requested that vessel operators calling the Port of Vancouver take practical measures, including implementing slow steaming, practicing near-time arrival where feasible, and adjusting voyage planning to reduce early arrivals and anchorage demand. These measures aim to reduce congestion and delays at port and anchorage areas, maintain overall port fluidity, and minimize environmental and community impacts.During this period, the port authority has indicated it will:
- Maintain access to the Inner Harbour for essential vessel activities (e.g., fumigation, inspections, bunkering);
- Assign anchorages based on vessel size to optimize capacity utilization;
- Consider alternative anchorage locations in Southern B.C. waters, including the Port of Nanaimo, Royal Roads, and Constance Bank;
- Assess, on a case-by-case basis, the use of berths at Canada Place’s cruise terminal as a relief measure (applicable terminal fees will apply).
