The Seaway Welland Canal Notice to Shipping No. 5 outlines new procedures for bunkering (fueling) and the transfer of chemicals or sludge along the Welland Canal for the 2026 navigation season.
Effective immediately, such activities are only permitted at designated locations (Wharf 2 and Wharf 16), and vessel representatives must complete and submit a bunkering checklist to the Welland Canal Operations Control Centre before beginning any bunkering or transfer operations. The notice also specifies requirements such as reporting before and after operations, strict “no smoking” rules, and safety protocols (e.g., stopping transfers in thunderstorms or high winds) to prevent pollution and ensure safe handling practices.
