Dear Member,

The general contractor for the Second Narrows Dredging Project in Vancouver, Fraser River Pile & Dredge (FRPD), provided the following update last week on the upcoming capital dredging works that will take place east of the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge, with the goal to allow passage for wider beam vessels (up to Aframax fully laden).

The work will include the removal of sediment and sandstone, using separate dredging and rock-treatment equipment. Work began on September 15 and is expected to continue until January 25, 2027, followed by demobilization through February 2.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) will oversee the project, with an engineering representative present during working periods. Operations are currently planned six days per week, from 0700 to 1730, although 24-hour operations may be required depending on vessel traffic, weather, environmental requirements and field conditions.

Members should note the following operational information:

  • Slow vessel speeds of approximately 4–6 knots will be requested when passing through the construction zone.
  • Some equipment may be positioned temporarily within the navigation channel during non-traffic windows.
  • Equipment movements and barge transits will be coordinated with MCTS, the VFPA and BC Coast Pilots.
  • Loaded barges carrying dredged material are expected to transit Second Narrows approximately once or twice per week under the Active Vessel Traffic Management (AVTM) system.
  • FRPD has indicated that it will suspend operations and move equipment as necessary to accommodate vessel traffic.
  • All equipment and anchors will otherwise remain outside the navigation channel unless prior authorization is provided by the port authority.
  • No impact is anticipated for vessel operations at the adjacent Rogers Sugar dock.

Please refer to the attached project presentation from FRPD for further details, including the planned work stages, equipment and site arrangements. Members are encouraged to direct any inquiries about this project to Steve Bagnell (West Coast Advisor, sbagnell@shipfed.ca) and the undersigned.

Best regards,
